Agrigento is the Sicilian city famous for the flowering almond, with a wealth of archaeological monuments. Important monuments in the mediaeval and modern town include Piazzale Roma, Via Atenea, the 13th century Church of S. Spirito, Piazza Purgatorio (named after the church of the same name), the Municipal Museum, the Gothic Church of S. Maria dei Greci, which was built over a Doric temple, and the Cathedral.

Important monuments in the archaeological zone of the temples are: the Church of S. Biagio, the shrine in the rock dedicated to Demeter and Persephone, the Greek fortifications, the Hellenic-Roman quarter, the Romanesque-Gothic Church of S. Nicolas, and the National Archaeological Museum - one of the most important in Southern Italy, the Temple of Zeus, the Shrine of the Gods of the Underworld, with the Temple of Castor and Pollux (5th century BC), the temples of Hercules and Concord (the most perfectly proportioned and best preserved of all existing Greek temples) and the Temple of Hera (Juno), standing alone in splendid solitude.
